Anoiher Time...Another Day
10/4/2008 7:10:03 AM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

The rules are still the same! Going against them has the same results, even today.
I was a teenager during the late 40’s- early fifties. Life was certainly different then. Happier times I would say.
We were teeny-boppers I guess, jitterbugging in the corner drugstore to the jukebox music, wearing our sweaters backwards, having socks of different color on each foot, saddle oxfords with bells on our shoestrings, don’t you know our teachers nearly went mad with us jingling up and down the halls?
Not many kids had cars back then so we walked or rode the bus to town to prowl through the five and dime stores and window shop along Main Street. Saturdays were the big day when everyone came to town and you would meet most of your friends at the local hot dog place or the movie.
The city formed a teen-age-canteen for the young folks of our little town where we could dance, have a coke, play ping-pong or just sit around and watch to see who might show up. It kept the kids off the streets and out of trouble.
I had to be home by 10 pm weeknights and 11pm on weekends. Of course I had been warned never to accept rides with strangers and all the warnings young girls get as they grow up, but that didn’t mean that I always followed the rules. On one such occasion my friend and I caught the last show and were to walk home afterwards. It was a long way home and when the very cute ticket taker at the movie offered to give us a ride we were thrilled, after all what could the harm be, we thought we knew him well enough and he was really goodlooking. As he closed down the theatre a couple of his friends were hanging around for a ride too. We trooped out to his car and Gloria and I got in the back seat together with one of the boys, but instead of heading for our house they headed for the cemetery north of town. I don’t need to tell you all the things my mother had warned me of came racing through my mind and I was terrified. As he slowed to turn a corner I grabbed hold of my friend, opened the car door and yanked her out with me. With 'skint' shins and hurt feelings we scrambled to our feet and took off running, hiding in the bushes when they turned around and came back. Now we had twice as far to walk home and it was past our curfew of eleven pm. As we walked along at a fast pace and I was imagining what I was to face for being late, a car passed us going in the opposite direction, it turned around and came back slowing as it came even with us. I heard someone call my name, “Don’t look.” I said to my friend. “Keep walking.” I was certain we would be murdered before the night was over. The car drove by us and turned the corner where we had to pass it.
Again this voice called out to me, “What are you doing out on the street this time of night?” and the figure of a man stepped into the light from the car. It was a neighbor boy that I had grown up with in the country. When I saw who it was I cried tears of relief and rushed into his arms. He took us home and went in to explain to my folks what had happened.
I never knew exactly what took place, but the ticket taker disappeared from the movie house and I, myself, learned a scary lesson that night.
