It makes you cry…

I don’t read French anymore. I left the mysteries of Moličre and Camus in my youth. Having moved to England, then Canada, I had to opt for a different language. Now, I read and write in English. Still, I miss the old French.
And now I hear that the most famous French bookstore in the United States will close its doors, this year, after 73 years in business. Why? Not because there are no more customers, no more readers of French literature. They’ll close because of the rampant greed of the Rockefeller Center. It was not enough for the American greed to create a world financial crisis. Not enough to destroy countless middleclass people by indulging their greed through mortgages they couldn’t afford. Not enough to pollute the atmosphere with gas-guzzlers just so as to line the pockets of the Big Three CEOs and their henchmen.
No. They also had to shut the doors on literature by raising the rent from $360,000 to $1,000,000 a year. So much for Fifth Avenue greed. I used to love New York. Really. Now? Now I think I’ll spend my money in Paris.
