What Do You See Yourself As?
2/20/2008 12:30:14 PM
If you are a writer then write.
Today is Thursday, February 21, 2008

A writer has a lot to say, well put it this way I love to talk, talk, and more talk. My 'ex' would put me on a timer to talk for 15 minutes and would count me down to the last minute. Well, that explains why he's the 'ex', but that also started me to write down my thoughts on paper. I told myself if a person said I talked too much, I'll just put it in a book.

It doesn't surprise me that I am a writer for the simple fact that I love to read books. I know I have told myself, "You know I could have written that." Words have always fascinated me and reading was so enjoyable.

Now, I can say it took me over twenty years to come into the realization that a writer is who I am today. However, there were times that others tried to discourage me because of my grammar. One time in school I said ‘fount’ instead of ‘found’ and my English teacher made me feel so bad that the thoughts of writing slipped right through my mind. Not to mention the comments about becoming a starving artist. If you allow negative people thoughts to penetrate your mind, then it can delay you from what you should be doing.

I have noticed throughout my life I’ve written five graduation speeches for schools, institutions, and non-profits that I have successfully performed. I have won two trophies for writing. Writing is what I love to do, in spite of my grammar errors. I have learned that my job is to get my words down on paper, while an editor, proofreader, or copy-editor can get paid to make it sound better.

“If it’s to be, it’s up to me” or “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he,” after hearing those sayings made me see myself as a writer, because that’s what I wanted to be. According to Epicteutus, “First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” So if you see yourself as being a writer then, you must write.

So today I ask, “What do you see yourself as?”
