Did You Make a Choice Today?
7/26/2005 9:23:18 AM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

Most people go through life as if in a fog not realizing that they have a choice to make each day.
We've all heard the saying, "Is your glass half empty or half full?" During the moment of hearing this we analyse our present situation and make a snap judgment then give an answer that in most instances leans toward the half full answer since we do not want to appear sullen. We then move on in our world regardless of our answer in the manner in which we began.

That simple saying can really make a difference in your life. Each morning when you awaken and plant your feet on the floor for the first time that day you have a choice. You can chose to live your life from the perspective of a glass half empty or from one that is half full. But how many of us take just a moment in time to decide which perspective we will live that day? How many of us realize that we have that choice regardless of our life circumstance.

Over the years of treating thousands of patients I've seen just about every life choice imaginable. People always had reasons for everything that occurred to them in life but very few took the responsibility themselves for their particular situation. I always found that curious. Whether rich or poor, happy or sad, overweight or skinny, everyone had a reason outside of themselves for their plight. It was the few that accepted their position in life that really intrigued me.

Our society seems to be externally focused on things to bring us pleasure and we wonder why we have a depressed population. Few people spend quality time in introspection finding out the real meaning of their life. It is those who see their cup and half full because they realize how fortunate they are to be alive regardless of their economic or social position.

You see, life is a miracle - a gift that we did nothing to deserve. Life was given to us freely without strings or guilt but given in grace to provide us with an opportunity to be. I'm asked many times what do I do now that I have left my practice. When I answer, "whatever I want" the person asking the question gives me a blank stare. They cannot relate to doing whatever they want. They look at life like they are forced to be here under some pretext. The see their glass as half empty.

One fundamental fact in life is that we are free to be whatever we chose......to do whatever we chose......and to live a life of choice. Very few understand this and when they get up each day they only see pain and worry. Few understand that they are the creator of their world - they hold the throttle to success or failure in their hands.

Tomorrow when you awaken take a moment to see your life's glass and make the decision to see it as one that is half, three-quarter's, or completely full. Your life will never be the same again.
