Thankfulness 11/21/2006 7:46:55 AM What are you thankful for? What a gorgeous day here in New England. The sun is brightly shining and there's not a cloud in sight. Tourists do not know a little secret we have here in Maine. That is, September, October, and November can be the most beautiful months of the year. Sure it gets a little chilly at night but the cold is really not that bad. In fact, sometimes our weather is better than the weather down south. You know, where some of the grey hairs go. Oops, I'm one of them too but I stay to enjoy the winter.
Yes, Thanksgiving is approaching quickly and my thoughts go to all the wonderful things that I've experienced during the past year. I start each day with a small prayer of thankfulness but on Thanksgiving I give thanks for all the incredible things as well as the minutia that made up my life during the past year. There is so much to be thankful for I can’t list all of them but the one biggie is my being thankful for life itself.
I had a conversation with a friend the other day in which we discussed the odds of either one of us being here on earth. He took the line of reason that since we are here the odds were pretty good, however, I believe strongly that the odds for myself being here are astronomical. When you take into consideration the one egg and one sperm that met to make me out of the millions of sperm that were present the odds become incredible. But……think then about the odds of your mother and father forming out of other eggs and sperm and then your grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on and on. Then, the odds become astronomical, in fact, I or you should not even be here!
Yes, I am thankful for life, for my wife, children, brothers and sister. I’m thankful for this beautiful sunshine I see today and the crisp air that I breathe. I’m thankful for you who take time out of your busy life to read my blogs and to work toward awakening yourself to the possibility of the Spirit’s presence in your life. I’m thankful for my two cats who make a contribution to my world of unbelievable depth and who have taught me what unconditional love is all about.
So, how about you? What are you thankful for? Did you begin today with an attitude of gratitude or did you get up complaining about all you have to do. Remember, the day you have nothing to do or bills to pay is the day you die. So, enjoy each moment of every day, pay those bills with happiness, breathe a deep sigh and know that each breath you take, each beat of your heart, and each blink of your eyes signify that unknowable spark given to you by your Creator.
Yes, life itself is a gift given freely to us. How many of us forget that and live lives of despair? How many of us see the glass as half empty instead of half full. Just being here means that you’ve won the lottery. Make each moment of every day special, give instead of take, heal instead of hurting someone, and be thankful each day for your gift of life given to you in grace.
I wish everyone the most wonderful Thanksgiving Day.
