A Sense of Community 5/16/2007 6:19:36 AM In my previous blog, I talked, well, whined about marketing a self-published book. Since then I’ve heard from friends and strangers with good advice and good wishes. That is reassuring, because it’s rare to feel a sense of community in this frantic world.
I am as new to blogs as I am to the above-mentioned experience, but I’m beginning to see the value in both. As I read the blogs of other members of AuthorsDen.com I realize I am far from alone. My thoughts, fears, joys, and sorrows are not unique to me. I don’t know why there’s such comfort in that, but there is.
I was fifty-three when I started writing and fifty-six when I decided it was time to publish. I chose to self-publish because it seemed silly to wait to find agents or publishers. It is impossible to know if that was a good choice or not, but I’ve always been a ‘let’s do it’ kind of person.
If the value of blogging was to my soul, then the value of self-promoting was to my intellect. I could not help but learn more about being a good writer traveling around cyber space looking for ways to market.
The experience may be frustrating at times. It may take me away from my new lover (writing), but the lessons are many. They are the kind I can only learn from diving head first into the depths of my fear and my ignorance. They are the kind that will bring me back to the surface, safe and eager to go in again.
