Santa's Work 12/13/2007 6:35:20 AM Thinking back... Hello readers,
I will never forget the days when my sister, brother and I would stay up the night before Christmas, filled with anticipation and excitement. We would talk about what we would find under the Christmas tree in the morning. Wondering what Santa would have left for us. Would my sister find a Baby Alive doll? Would I find a new Nancy Drew book? Or a Cabbage Patch doll? What about a pink, fluffy coat? Or even a new pair of roller skates?
And eventually we would fall to sleep, still dreaming about Santa working feverishly through the night to make sure all the good little boys and girls had their presents.
Then before dawn, we would be up, trying to drag our parents out of bed. Never mind we could not get up this early for school but we were definitely up for Christmas! And mom and dad would stumble out of bed, mumbling in croaky voices for us to calm down.
But we wouldn't, couldn't pay attention to anything they asked of us right then. We were too busy making our way downstairs to see if Santa had been dead on. Had he done right by us? We had tried to mind our parents and do our homework. We had said our prayers and even eaten our brocolli.
When we finally reached the landing, we were off and running. We grew more excited with every step. Then we rounded the corner and made a beeline into the lviing room where we finally saw the big pine Christmas tree that we had decorated weeks ago! It was still so beautifully decorated with green, red and blue tinsel and flashing white bulbs with a large angel sitting on top. But what made us scream and jump up and down were the piles of gifts with pretty wrapping stacked neatly underneath.
My brother would be the first one to move, snatching up a gift, and quickly checking the gift tag...and my parents would sit on the sofa and watch us, sipping on cups of steaming hot coffee...we would hold up each item realizing that Santa did listen. He did look at his list and check it twice! He really did!
And then several hours later, we would be torn away from our new toys and forced to get dressed and leave the house to join the other family at Grandma's house for a huge Christmas dinner...with turkey, ham, greens, hot yeast rolls...um those were the days...those were magical times...
...And well of course my sister, brother and I are all grown with our own families now. But the magic of Christmas is still there and now we can watch our own kids squeal with delight as they pull off the last bit of wrapping on a gift they had dreamed about...another generation and more memories created...and Santa's work continues on even in my heart.
Merry Christmas to all!
