Listening to Brahms 4/4/2010 8:50:53 AM Listening to Brahms Easter morning and Spring here in Florida is now in FULL Swing. This idyllic weather won't last long. The sun here just too hot for that...
But nothing is better for Spring than Brahms Symphonies and Overtures. I luckily have the scores as well to make it interesing. Brahms is often considered "autumnal" but their was some "vernal" in him as well. He is also often depicted in portraits as an old man with a long beard. I don't buy into this. He died at only 65 but only in his very last years was his appearance like this. He was an astonishingly handsome young man and along with his beloved girlfriend (opera singer) that he had late in life he was quite Springlike.
And it is reflected in these recordings. So in one week I've gone from the other side of spring by listening to "THE RITE OF SPRING" (Stravinsky) to the more relaxed, spirituality of one of my orchestral mentors; Brahms.
And here are a link to great recordings of his symphonies on Amazon: Ricardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orch.
