Television 11/13/2007 6:19:12 PM Oh for the good old days
I miss watching the shows of my youth. The ones that tended to make you feel good, not dirty. Too many new shows try to 'push the envelope' of decency.
Andy Griffith Show, I Love Lucy, Flintstones, and a host of others that worked on what was best in people, not showcasing the worst. But that's what sells right?
Our television and media, which once set a standard about how well our lives could be, has been lowered so far that does anyone realize that life can be better than what they have?
Not talking getting religion or anything like that. Simple respect and decency. Loving your family, respecting others, not trying to find trash that can be aired on Jerry Springer or the other shows.
Is this who we have become? Returned to the days of the Roman Coliseum where people fought and died for other's amusement? Perhaps not seeing an actual life ended, but hopes, dreams, love, all laid bare and trampled for our enjoyment.
The ratings show that that is what the majority of people watch, and want to watch. Court shows where the judge is not simply ruling on cases but exercising character assassination. Having never been in an actual court, maybe disrespect for those before the bench is common, I hope not. But then, that is what it takes to get people to watch. Character assassination! Insults, put downs, innuendoes. I for one would never put my case before any of them.
Reality shows? I watched the first Survivor and still peruse American Idol from time to time. Everything else doesn't do it for me. People exhibiting their lives for another's enjoyment, I simply can't watch it.
Now on to my favorite shows which have been canceled. John Doe, Jake 2.1 to name two. I really liked them and was sad when they were gone. Now all that's left is Monk and Psych! which of the two, Monk is better.(He's the main reason I still have cable.)
I guess there's no helping it, people are who they are. Being in the minority, those who avoid bringing negatives into one's life, isn't easy but far better than contaminating my world with such things.
And yes, despite all I have said above, I do like watching South Park. Not all the shows to be sure, but most of them.(Can there be any worse show than South Park?) Egads, they have me too!!!
