Hang In There

It's all about suspenders and holding up your pants.
Hanging In There

When I was younger I had certain standards. For instance, I never wore suspenders or garters. Wasn’t cool, I figured.
That was before my midsection surrounded my hips and left nothing but a balloon for my belt to cling to. Thus my pants slid down and covered my shoes. I spent a lot of time and energy hitching them up. Not my shoes, my pants.

I had hitched them a couple of times the other day as I carried out a long-standing plan to clean out my bedroom closet. In the process I found a pair of black suspenders hiding under an old sweatshirt. What were they doing there? Ah, I remembered. I wore them as part of a Halloween costume? A light went on. These things would hold up my pants and I could hide them by wearing them under a shirt.

It was tedious snapping them to my pants, but as I walked around the living room my pants stayed put.

Being cool at my age – I’m 84 – is much easier if my pants aren’t falling down.

I’m thinking of putting them on Nick Bancroft, the hero of my detective novels. He’s not that old but maybe it will give him character.
