Exploring the world 2/3/2009 8:59:04 AM something I've learned while writing a novel
I've never written a novel before. I'm finding the word count overwhelming. At first I thought I was writing a novella. A novella is from 17,500 to 45,000 words. When I thought I was finished, I shared my work with friends.
They said, "Its good but its not finished."
I was upset but I looked again and knew they were right.
I began a re-write. The more I worked the more I began to live in the world I was creating. The characters began to come to life for me. They had names, faces, personalities. They began to speak to me. I heard them more and more clearly. I began to see where they were living and how they felt about the place. I heard their problems as well as their triumphs. I got to know their sense of humour.
I walked around in their world. I felt the wind. I felt the sun. I became familiar with the streets. I saw the houses. I smelt the flowers.
When I left the world, I realized that I had added to my word count.
I'm not saying that its easy for me to visit the world I'm creating. Its like learning to walk on the moon. It takes a lot of planning and its a big risk. ...but it is worth it.
I'm not yet finished exploring this new world. The novel (novella...?...whatever it becomes) is not yet done. However, when I look back at how far I've come I'm amazed. All I need do is continue to trust and believe in the story.
