doing that marketing call
Years and years ago I was told by a distributor that the best way to do marketing calls is in person. She maintained that nothing -- not phone calls, not emails -- beats one-on-one.

This person was an extrovert. So talking with a new person was a walk in the park for her.

I'm a introvert. Talking with a new person isn't a walk in the park for me.

I would rather read in front of a roomful of people than talk with one new person. Especially if I feel that that one new person is passing judgment on me and mine.

My new book is part of me. I have poured my heart into it. I have spent many hours crafting it.

"If they reject my book -- they reject me." It isn't easy to shake this mindset.

Yet last Tuesday I spent the morning visiting bookstores. I talked with book retailers about my new novel. I walked away from each store my head held high. I was proud of myself for overcoming my fears.

So how did I do it? How did I overcome my fears?

Well, I simply realized that no one was going to speak for me but me. I realized that if I wanted my book to succeed I would have to walk into that bookstore. I would have to shake the hand of that book retailer. I was going to have to politely ask for a chance to share my book with them.

And I learned from this experience. I learned that there is always another bookstore, always another venue. I learned that the only one who can deny me an opportunity...the only one who can shut me down...the only one who can stand in the way of my success is me.

I am determined to succeed.

All I ask for is a chance. All I will do is keep the faith. All I will give myself is a chance.
