lists ...

... a continuing variation of the "to do" list.

my favorite quote today: "i can hear my own thoughts! there! i heard them again!" my eldest, now 20, said this when she was still a toddler. while playing on the floor one day in a patch of sunlight, she realized the wild imaginings that came out of her fingers into the dollhouse before her had actually come from her very own self. the rest of that day she marveled at how her mind would say things as simple as "walk," "chew this delightful peanut butter and jelly sandwich," "nap, you are tired," etc. i hear from this adult child so very rarely these days as she navigates her own life, my constant hope being, "please, please, please keep track of that voice!"

number of fireworks bought for the holiday: zero, not even a sparkler. never buy them, except for the sparklers or perhaps an occasional "snake," but this year, no real need or desire to buy any. we, the "big kids" sans any little kids this holiday weekend are not buying into the craze.

one thing we have to do today because we put off doing it yesterday: laundry! <grumble>

one thing we will probably put off doing today that we already put off doing yesterday and will probably put off doing tomorow: the laundry.

unshelved books in the house, lying in various stages of "in use" status: the poet's market, pathology and laboratory medicine, hiroshima, great expectations, basic electronics, drawing and painting -a refresher, long distances, household/yard and office chemicals, quick crochet, the joy of fruit, for the time being, etc. etc. etc. ...okay, this list is futile and i'm building it from what i can see just from my desk and only got the half of it. mostly, it makes me realize how many books need to be reshelved in the entire house. just when in the world does our home library aide come on shift?!?!?!?

cds lying title down, silver-backed and exposed: melissa e., ben folds, creed, al green, camino palmero, red hot chilis (okay, i can see this is going the same as above, a reminder that our volunteer cd shelving elf has not been around lately).

most spectacular and yet disappointing experience of the day: an early morning, very disruptive and loud, briskly turbulant air mass that moved in around 5 a.m., had all the components of a drenching storm and then left after an hour of teasing noise without so much as a drop.

signs of nature in spite of this: the birds still sing, our container gardens are full of blossoms and hummingbirds, the grass is still somewhat green, the trees wear varying shades of the same and things appear to be thriving.

most hysterically funny and ungrounded piece of information i received yesterday: "yes, we decided to come tomorrow to get the rest of my stuff. we don't care if it's the fourth of july, it's the only day we have off to finish moving!" this came at the end of a phone call that started out with the jubilant burst, "hi mom, i'm home [safe and sound]," from my second eldest daughter whose "home" is no longer here, since her post graduation move to an apartment with her cousin-in-crime. so when she returned from her summer trip to see her father, this was not the home she returned to. her famous last words on the phone yesterday, regarding forgoing holiday with her friends to finish moving her stuff, were of course delivered with a grain of salt. we have not seen them yet today, the goofs.

most obvious status of our nest: empty at the moment, which explains all the time for hiking, our absolute phobia towards getting the laundry done and the unshelved status of all the books and music in the house.

what is currently tweaking my olfactory senses and making my stomach grip in anticipation: something of a new potato, freshly scrubbed variety, now marrying some type of oil in the fry pain, with wicked spices, carefully ministered by my loverboy.
