... what the cat dragged in ...

what was under the old fridge after nine years:
-two empty boxes of cereal
-a cribbage board
-lots of beads
-a roll of masking tape
-an old prom picture (sara jane, etc.)
-two magnets
-this really weird gunky black dust.
-two green felt tip markers
-a piece of chalk
-one catnip mouse toy
-four rusty footprints from the fridge bottom.

what was put back into the new fridge:
-mild cheddar cheese
-leftover king salmon
-leftover herbed rice
|-real butter
-1%milk
-lactaid
-diet pepsi
-catsup
-mustard
-mayo
-salmon sauce creation (mayo-horse radish, relish etc. mixture)
-approximately 2-1/2 dozen large eggs
-ranch dressing
-blue cheese dressing
-leftover salad
-one yellow onion
-one leftover beanish/hamish meal thingy
-ground chuck, thawed
-jelly

what got moved to the chest freezer before we moved the old fridge out:
-several frozen meal containers (leftovers)
-frozen corn|
-tater tots
-moose lodge frozen yogurt

what lies in the depths of the chest freezer:
-what's left of the salmon (sigh ... we can see the bottom of the freezer again)
-and everything listed above.

what's in the new fridge freezer compartment:
-three empty ice cube trays
-one empty ice cube bin
(i was going to fill them, but this is a lot like the "how come nobody puts a fresh roll of toilet paper on the spinner" battle. i always put the new roll on and always fill the ice trays when they are empty, but i thought this time it would be fun to hear someone 8 hours from now say, "how come no one filled the ice cube trays?!?!?!"

how many  unidentified items, removed from the old fridge, had to be destroyed:  four.

when is the perfect time to get a new fridge: when someone else (your older brother) gets a brand new fridge because he remodeled his kitchen and he needs someone to take the practically new fridge he still had, and after nine years with your own stupid fridge and right before thanksgiving! and before you do any big grocery shopping!

old fridge memories (1980-2003/23 years of fridge madness):
|
-first fridge was harvest gold matching the stove in the house we owned in sheridan, wyoming.
-second fridge was an old, old nearly antique fridge that i moved in and out of two apartments.
-two brownstone apartments sported a white fridge and an almond color (no fingerprint finger fridge) in the twin cities.
-harvest gold matching the stove, reappeared in an apartment outside in a twin cities suburb.
-white (no fingerprint finish) fridge in a house in the same suburb.
-the current fridge, white with may strange quirks and anomalies that we moved into this house nine years ago and is now sitting on the deck waiting to be hauled to fridge heaven.

things usually found on the fridge: photos, magnets, magnetic letters or magnetic poetry, drawings, lists.

-funniest fridge story: before a birthday party in minneapolis (the almond-colored no fingerprint finish fridge), i made a huge batch of "finger jello" prior to a birthday party. i mixed the gelatin and knox on the dining room table in an adjoining room, and poured it into several jelly roll pans. when the time came to transfer them to the fridge, i readied the door in the "open" position with two shelves completely clear for the tray of GREEN finger jello. one tray was transported from table to fridge without incident. second tray, as i carried it, i envisioned what it would be like if i stumbled. this caused a strange sensation to rise in my throat, like a giggle, which then made my hands jiggle which then made the jelly roll pan begin to shake, which then made me take bigger and faster baby steps, which resulted in my pitching an entire jelly roll pan of finger jello mixture into the fridge. it coated every surface and begin to congeal most immediately.

most of it, i was able to clean up with really hot water to deactivate the mega-gel-transformation that was taking place but every once in awhile some green would still appear on top of a jelly jar lid, and when we finally moved from the place there was still a tiny bit of green found in crevices on the final fridge clean out.

worst fridge story: old fridge, old house circa late 1960s. the fridge was in our kitchen next to the basement door. next to the fridge was an old overcoat, fur side out, that our schnoodle, sambo, used to sleep on. one day, my mom discovered the coat was soaking wet, thought sam had urinated and threw him out of the house, laundered his "bed," mopped the floor and brought him back to his cozy spot next to the fridge. later on, she discovered the floor to be wet again. after cleaning up the mess several times, disciplining the dog and banishing him from the house while she dealt with the mess, she finally realized it was the fridge leaking. sam was allowed back in and thankfully was not "put down" because of some unknown urinary tract problem.
