do you hear what i see?

number of inches of snow they said we would get today: 1 if we were lucky.

number of inches we really got: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. blissful, evenly falling snow. so we got a couple of inches. i lost count, just enjoyed the thickened blanket, and opened my front window like snow white every couple of hours and threw handfuls of seeds to the chickadees and juncos. they were within arm's length. spoiled rotten, they are. they chatter until they are fed, then chatter another tune when they are well fed before flying back to the hollow tree.

do i live with the keebler elves: no, but thanks for asking.

number of lines and characters i transcribed this week for someone else: 6288 lines in a 65 character line that's 408720 characters of type, not words, mind you ... character count. you be the judge how many words per line as in medical transcription it's anyone's guess. i can make one word take up a whole line: esophoagogastroduodenoscopy ... all one word, or how about 3 words to take up just as much space: isoimmune neonatal thrombocytopenia. i think you get the picture, and if a picture could paint a thousand words, i think a picture would rather be painting 6288 lines or 408720 characters coming straight from their own head and through their fingers to the keyboard ... that would be a novella!

my favorite word: "exacerbation" or "exacerbated." i don't know why, but i've just always liked it, and as long as there are a million medical concerns that can take up whole lines at once, and if just one of these concerns is exacerbated in the slightest way, this exacerbation, keeps me working, job security, something new every day. all kinds of craziness.

how many of my own words did i transcribe this week: enough to feel satisfied. really, it was an excellent week in that regard. a good writing week. some old, some new, some revised and some blue. bliss.

what wicked ratio of net/surf-to-work do i apply to get through a shift/day: it's been something like for every 3-4 brutal patient logs i transcribe, which can be as little as 3 or 4 pages or as many as 12-20, i reward myself by "reading" which usually involves the web, or i'd have books open all over my desk. (wait a minute, i do have books open all over my desk!) more than one person has asked (in horror), walking in on me in my office, "how many f'ing windows do you have minimized on your desk top?!?!? the number can range anywhere from as little as 3 to 4 or up to as many as 12-20. there is some crazy math to this, which i will explain to my neurologist the next time i "stroke out."

as if!!! this is not bad enough: i listen to the radio in the background. i have found that the radio on the fridge, currently tuned to some hard-rock madtown station, nearly a room away and behind my head is more subliminal than intrusive. that way, when i leave my desk after a bout of transcribing, i don't feel like wiping the blood off my feet, or shaking the gauze and gooey bandages loose from my fingers after a particular tough morning. instead, i'm usually rolling lyrics around in my head.

number of phonecalls i overheard this week when doctors forgot to hang up the dictation line before making their next call: the big 3 ... one of them 7 minutes long, and we are "required" to listen from beginning to end of every sound file, no matter if it is a mistake, a total dial tone or whatever, because it is death to the transcriptionist who signs off a file that had something left to say.

number of things i can tell you about the number of lines and characters and/or the phone conversations: zero. if i told you more, i'd have to kill you.

do i ever multi-task: whatever would make you ask such a thing?!?!?!?

am i on crack: no siree! just happy. just thrilled to be back in my "groove" after suffering a severe case of burnout on the job. i honestly thought i couldn't listen to another bloody word, but i'm thrilled to see these same words spilling out my fingers again, while i'm listening to the radio, of course, reading a book, surfing the net, revising a poem, reading a poem, eating a poem, breathing a poem ...
