who would have thunk it, with just a 3-pound brain?

Amazing Medical Facts of the Body (brought to you by employer/company-issued 2004-05 desk calendar which arrived in the mail today):

-Our lungs inhale over two million liters of air every day.  The surface area of a human lung is equal to a tennis court.

-When you blush, your stomach lining also reddens.  (I totally tune into this because my stomach always feels hot when I blush or come to a startled realization.)

-The human body has fewer muscles in it than a caterpillar.  (If that’s true, then how come a caterpillar can’t bench-press a car off their back, so they aren’t lying squished all over the road?)

-Babies start dreaming even before they are born! (Way cool! … and I guess that marks the first and last times of truly peaceful sleep!)

-The human body can function without a brain.  (We’ve all seen that, haven’t we?!?!)

-The average human head weighs about 10 pounds.  The average human brain weighs about 3 pounds.  (I think the other 7 pounds is Jello.)

-Your eyeballs are 3-1/2 percent salt.  (We should call them tearballs.)

-It takes about 20 seconds for a red blood cell to circle the whole body.

-An average human drinks about 16,000 gallons of water in a lifetime.  (I’m deathly afraid that I match that amount in diet Pepsi as well.)

-Humans shed about 600,000 particles of skin every hour, or about 15 pounds per year.  (Dunno about you, but I didn’t necessarily need to know that.)

-When you sneeze, all your bodily functions stop –even your heart.  (So, think how many mild heart attacks you have during allergy season.)

-You burn more calories sleeping than you do watching TV.  (Watching TV makes me sleepy, so I guess that makes me a sleep-workout-aholic.)

-Our eyes never grow.  Our nose and ears never stop going.  (I’m trying to figure that one out.  I’ve heard the thing about the eyes, but I figured it was the same for ears and nose as well, considering my nose is still a button and I have yet to sprout anything close to earlobes.)

-Children grow faster in the springtime.  (You actually can see this “sprouting overnight” phenomenon.)

-Every month you grow a brand new layer of skin.  (The skin is the biggest body system, after all.  Be kind to it.  A sunburn to your nose could some day threaten every last inch of your skin, all the way down to your toes!)

-Every time you lick a stamp, you’re consuming 1/10 of a calorie.  (Every time you send an email, you probably just downed pizza or some other desk-friendly snack, so what’s the calorie count of that?)

-Amercians, on average, eat 18 acres of pizza every day.  (That’s just f’ing scary, if you ask me.)

-Did you know that you are more likely to be killed by a champagne cork than by a poisonous spider?  (Yeah, and so I should be worried since I’ve been gone from home these last three weeks, coming home to dust and cobwebs … and an amazing web full of ready to aim and fire champagne corks!)

-Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people.  (This is sort of sad, because if we all live to old age, our baby brother is going to die before the rest of us.  So not fair.)

-In 24 hours, the blood in the body travels a total of 12,000 miles –that’s four times the width of North America.  (Nice to know that part of my body has taken a trip this summer, since my vacation plans have been moved up to October.)

-The average person falls asleep in 7 minutes.  (If you sleep next to a person of this “average” sort, it probably annoys you that they can fall asleep so fast.)

-During your lifetime, you’ll eat about 60,000 pounds of food.  This is the weight of about 6 elephants! (I so don’t feel like going grocery shopping now!)

-We are about 70 percent water.  (This fact always makes me grin because I remember when I was about 4, my elder brother (all of 5) tried to tell my parents it was so true that we are made of 99% water!  They kept telling him he must have misunderstood, but probably he was just remembering past car trips, as my parents were not ones to stop at waysides for potty breaks.  We always had to wait until we “got there.”  Hence, the 99% water theory!)

-It’s impossible to sneeze with your eyes open.

-Women blink nearly twice as much as men.

-The length of your foot is usually the same length as that of your forearm, between your wrist and the inside of your elbow.  (I actually checked this one out with the tape measure.  I’ve always been told I have very small feet for a tall person, and they are indeed shorter than the distance between my wrist and elbow.  Looking at the length from wrist to inside of the elbow, I’m glad my feet aren’t that big! … that extra 1-1/2 inches would freak me right out!)
