...back to this, that and the bloody other ...

What day is it:  Supposedly, November 22, 2004 … a Monday.

What day is it at Blah Blah Regional Medical Center:  Friday afternoon, November 19, 2004, in the busy emergency room with surgeries backed up to Wednesday and stat cases every two seconds dictated by a weary doctor with a case of laryngitis.

When is the last time I transcribed a medical report:  Sometime in October, near as I can remember, and I literally shut off the work zone of my home office and never even thought about the mess during my leave.  I actually stopped using big words in normal conversation .  One day while I was getting my nails done, my nail tech asked me what happens when they perform a colonoscopy.  I had to really sit there and think for a minute and then told her in lay terms that she was going to have a garden hose shoved up her arsh.  For the life of me, I couldn't put my tongue on the word flexible sigmoidoscopy, or remember the better parts of the procedure.  Wait ... there are no better parts of that procedure!

Who else can do my job:  Apparently, anyone who wanders over to my desk.  … The other night on some wife swapping show, one of the wives to be swapped was described as having a “typing job” working from home.  I nearly fell off the couch, crying out, “Oh, geez, don’t let her be a medical transcriptionist, and if she is please let her give us a good name, and if in fact she is, let’s beat up the announcer for calling her a typist, so to speak.”

As it turns out, she was a medical transcriptionist, and she was having trouble getting her 7 hours in every day, while also catering to her family’s needs.  I work with people like this, which is why the emergency room is sometimes backed up to Friday and the surgical ward has overflowed with no one around to handle the stat cases.  It's probably also why the attending physician from hell has a case of laryngitis because he's tired of screaming into the dark abyss.

But, just you and I never mind, because this particular woman swapped out and went to live in a home where she went to work every day as a auto sales manager, an out of the house job, “as if” that is any different from a sitting at home on your ass job, which is what they made transcription look like.  And apparently, we don't have time to lift the cushions and vacuum the couch, because this lady's couch was freaky scary even though the rest of her house looked great.

And, further never fear, since while she was gone (swapped out to the other house), the auto sales manager wife who took her place supposedly sat down and did her job into the wee hours, and when she got sick and tired of it she made her newly swapped husband do it for the next week.

Thank you Wife-Swapping Show of America, you just set us back 50 years, AND you made it look like confidentiality is not an issue, nor skill, since it seems like just about anyone can wander into our home offices in their stocking feet and get to “typing!”  Ouch!

Excuse me, but I couldn't sell a car if my life depended on it.  I wouldn't even pretend.

If what they showed were truly the case, I would not have come off leave this early and returned to work.  I’d still be swimming around in early morning coffee, journal writing, writing revision and artwork.  While I was at it, I’d have the dog, the cats, the rabbit, the fish and the occasional onlooker sit at my desk and do the real work, so I could keep f***ing around.

This morning we had this amazing sunrise.  Ali pointed it out, and I took a picture of it.  The last several weeks, I've returned to the sunroom to finish watching the sky light up.

Suffice it to say, I am back in the trenches after a period of leave, the likes of which I truly deserved after nearly 20 years busting my rear “typing” and catering to my family and loved ones.  It was like taking three maternity leaves ... 21, 19 and 11 years after the fact.

Let’s  hope the effects of this leave have some longevity as it looks like it’s going to be a bugger for the next 20 years! and I'm not going to have time to vacuum under the couch cushions!

If my Yorkie mix knew home row, maybe we would get somewhere, but so far he has only jumped in my lap this morning because I have toast … his favorite.  Later he will rip up the rest of my paper napkin, and I guess we'll call that "art" for today.
