A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words
1/21/2008 10:18:04 PM
The headline read, “Right Head, Wrong body.” Seeing this, I thought, “What?” And given my curiosity was aroused, I decided to check out the article.

As I have previously mentioned, I don’t care to read news reports on a computer screen, preferring instead to read my news the old-fashioned way—by sitting down with a cup of coffee, putting up my feet, and opening the newspaper. However, Sunday evening when I logged on to the Web in order to check my e-mail, I glimpsed an interesting headline on my homepage, which happens to be Yahoo. The headline read, “Right Head, Wrong body.” Seeing this, I thought, “What?” And given my curiosity was aroused, I decided to check out the article.

Well, according to Yahoo News, a political ad has been circulating around Houston, Texas and arriving in people’s mailboxes—an ad that does not exactly reflect the truth.

“So what?” you ask. “Haven’t politicians always been notorious liars?”

Well, yes, that they have, and you certainly won’t get any argument from me on the point; however, this particular campaign ad seems to have taken political duplicity to a formerly unparalleled level of deceit. See, this ad includes a picture of Dean Hrbacek (Yes, that’s how his last name is spelled), a congressional candidate and former mayor of Sugar Land, Texas, with his smiling face attached to a much slimmer and more physically fit body than the one he actually possesses. And, no, he did not lose weight or start working out at the local gym before having his picture made. As I just said, the body is slimmer and fitter than his real body. Then again, apparently the body isn’t his at all but that of someone else entirely. Whose? Heck, if I know, and the article doesn't say. But that’s beside the point. The point is that the man, or maybe his handlers, obviously decided to present a much more dashing image to the public in hopes that it would help his political bid for Congress.

Oh, the wonders of modern technology. Now, if we want to present ourselves as a person other than the one we really are, all we have to do is find the body—or the head, for that matter—that we would like to have instead of our own and then have that body or head digitally attached to the other body part, and “Voila,” we become the person we have always dreamed of being. And that, my friends, means that if I want the head of, say, Nicole Kidman, paired with the body of Halle Berry, I can have it done. The only problem, of course, is that I will still have to stagger out of bed each morning, glance bleary-eyed into the bathroom mirror, and see the same Carol Culver Rzadkiewicz starring back at me. Then again, at least my picture will be really, really hot; and like the old adage says, “A picture is worth a thousand words.”
