Warm-up activity - brainstorming
8/9/2009 8:01:40 AM
Brainstorming can help you silence that little
voice that says, "This is crap!"

Another warm-up activity is brainstorming. What you want to do is silence that little voice inside your head that is saying, “This is crap. You suck. You're a hopeless case.” You can always listen to that voice (somewhat) when you reach the editing process. Brainstorming caters to the right side of your brain, the creative side. Scientists say this sort of activity can create new pathways in your brain as can staggering your activities when you wake up in the morning. The more pathways the better. When you brainstorm, you want to be specific and personal. Some beginning writers are afraid to be too personal. They’re afraid their mother will see what they’ve written. Get over it. Others are too general. Look for specific images and anecdotal references that can give you something meaty to write about. Let’s start with the word “red.” You can list single words, phrases and even sentences. You should try to keep going for five minutes. Go where your subconscious wants to go. If you get stuck, write “I don’t know,” or “nothing is coming to me.” That will get old in a hurry and you’ll think of something. Here we go.

Red
Red-faced
Embarrassing
Accused of stealing red boots in first grade
Humiliated
Nun slapped me for fooling around in church
Redneck
Southerner
Georgia
South Carolina
Stationed there for two years while in the Navy
Conservative
Rush Limbaugh
Fell on his head while a baby
Apples
Tomatoes
Had to eat everything on our plates when in parochial school.
Hated Tomato clumps. They kept regurgitating
Red-blooded
Red, white, and blue
Patriotic
Is nationalism a good idea?
Nationalism and capitalism go hand-in-hand
Red River Valley
River runs north
Sugar beets
1997 Flood
McDonald’s lady donated money for flood relief
Don’t know
Can’t think of anything
Better Red than dead
Communism hijacked by dictators
Santa Claus
Christmas presents
Best ever was portable record player
Chubby Checker and the Twist

Okay, lots of stuff there to write about. Getting slapped around by a nun when you’re seven years old is enough to warp you for life. Circle stuff you might want to go in depth about. Next step is something called free writing where you really let it go and where you get some material for your actual writing projects.
