Conservative psyche 5/12/2010 7:54:19 AM What kind of person is "Pro-life" on one hand and supports torture on the other?
I've always wondered how a person could watch Glen Beck for ten minutes without banging his/her head against the wall in frustration. I imagine it has something to do with rationalization. The man is a "former" drug addict and alcoholic, yet somehow maintains credibility with his viewers. How? Somebody tell me how! I'm thinking it's some kind of personality disorder. Here's my best guess as to what these people are essentially like.
1. They see things in black and white. There is no such word as "nuance" in their vocabulary. Glen Beck is on their side so he must be a good guy, even though he gets most of his info from a Mormon John Birch Society bloviator.
2. Don't bother them with logic. The establishment clause of the first amendment is pretty clear about separation of church and state, but they still maintain it REALLY means the United States was founded as a Christian nation.
3. They're really sore losers. According to a New York Times/CBS poll most tea baggers are over 45 years old, worried about losing their economic status to minorities, and MORE CONSERVATIVE than most Republicans.
4. They're willing to gamble their futures (and ours) on the roll of the dice. It's okay to pass a law that allows anybody to get a gun, without a background check and to carry a concealed weapon. It's okay to take that gun into church. Somebody might try to shoot the minister, as happened down South a while back. It's not likely that a gunfight might break out and women and children could be caught in the crossfire. Hey, let's nominate Sarah Palin for president, despite the fact that she's not qualified to run a carnival concession. Heck, she'll have somebody like Cheney helping her out anyway if not Darth himself. And what if global warming (97 percent of scientists agree that climate change is real) is a reality? Do we roll the dice and keep on polluting the atmosphere? Not a problem; we're in the End Times anyway.
5. Suspicious if not paranoid about anything new. Stem cell research. Global warming. A black president. Financial reform. Would rather pay a thousand dollars a month (and rising) than support universal health care.
6. Anti-intellectual. Who would possibly complain about college professors being liberal except a conservative? It's amazing they can find a conservative professor anywhere. The idea is to look at all the evidence and come to a conclusion, unlike Antonin Scalia, who makes up his mind before he hears the evidence. Because he's always right.
7. Bellicose and pugnacious. Now they swear nobody ever spit on a congressmen, that there's no evidence it happened. Well, it must have been faked (like the moon landing?) because I've seen those black congressmen spit upon dozens of times on the (liberal?) news.
8. Hypocritical. I followed a guy down the road yesterday with a bumper sticker on his truck that read, "I'll keep my guns and freedom, you keep the 'change.' He also had a veteran sticker on his window. I'm thinking he was a clerk typist in the military. My brother won the Bronze Star in Vietnam and he doesn't even own a gun; I know lots of other veterans like that. Anyway, the freedom jag gets my goat. How can you be for personal freedom and deny it to Mexican/Americans in Arizona? These are US citizens being forced to prove they're Americans. A poll I saw yesterday said 60% of Americans support this nonsense. I don't think they understand who's being profiled.
