California Earthquakes 6/17/2005 9:12:20 PM Crescent City, Anza, Yucaipa and Eureka quakes have some Californians rattled. Animal disaster preparedness expert and author, Diana L. Guerrero comments.
Yesterday was quiet...the local contractors have not been on the job for two days. I took advantage of the lull to pull out my hammock and relax. I certainly didn't expect to have the hammock move in response to the local earthquake!
The movement lasted about 10 seconds. I watch the house move and the trees sway and my hammock moved without any help from me.
As a survivor of several large quakes (6.7 and up) I really don't like the experience. This one was not too far away but far enough to roll. When you are closer to the epicenter you are jolted. At any rate, both experiences suck.
A few of the animals I know were jumpy yesterday morning. Today one of my pals has been clingy. Hard to tell what they are responding too and that is a challenge.
The BIG lessons out of all of this is to make sure you are prepared. If a large quake hits a major metropolitan area, the repercussions affect the electrical (and fuel availability as the pumps won't work), telephone lines, and other supply channels. In worse case scenarios it will take some time to get assistance to the area and aftershocks will be common for a long while.
So, if you reside in California, be sure to store some food and water. If you need tips for pets visit my website or purchase my electronic booklet, "Disaster Preparedness for Pet Owners and Pet Professionals."
