Cat got ya?
2/10/2004 7:03:52 AM

Animal behaviorist and author teaches cat behavior class in San Diego.
Yesterday was a great day. Stella attempted to join me while I did yoga (guess that is why someone started doga). She eventually just watched me and the tape.

My jaunt on the beach was peaceful and enjoyable. A solitary seal lazily porposed along the gentle shorebreak during my amble. It felt like I was walking the seal since he accompanied me for about half my journey. The water was like glass today, with waves that peeled perfectly like in a surfer's dream. No breeze today, just gentle sunrays and the crashing roar of the surf.

I am happy that I can enjoy myself anytime and not only on the weekends. I forget that it is usual until I meet someone who reminds me. I met a couple living here for three months. They asked if I had the day off and shared that they have been married for over 50 years--the guy still calls her his bride. I find it interesting that some couples make it through thick and thin, while all around me marriages fail...

Although everyone comes up to where I live to play in the snow or on the lake, I only really notice the insanity down here. People race around attempting to stuff enjoyment into a short period of time. It is more frantic here. The drive up the mountain and the high altitude influence slows many people down--and they appear more relaxed--or maybe it is because they have traveled beyond their living area and automatically relax by default?

Last night I returned to Old Town for my course on cat behavior. I meandered through the area, had a quick dinner outside, and then met my small class. I don't usually teach for such a small number, but wanted to run this course since it is the first time we have offered it in ages. The students were curious and fun.

As active participants we discussed their concerns and behavior problems. I chatted about how they could address the kitty challenges facing them. They also learned secrets to understanding all animals (found in my book) and went home with an assignment that will spark new awareness with their feline friends.

The drive back to Oceanside was long, but Stella was waiting for me and did her happy dance and greeting noises. It is always wonderful to have such a reception!
