Poetry Contest Closes for 2009
10/4/2009 9:36:35 PM
The 2009 Tom Howard Poetry Contest for Verse In All Styles and Genres closed on September 30, 2009. This year, prize money is guaranteed at $5,350, but the judges may elect to award additional prizes as they did recently with the Tom Howard Short Story, Essay and Prose Contest, where the judges awarded no less than $5,850 in prize money, $500 more than the guaranteed $5,350.
What are judges looking for in poetry? Well I discuss this at length in my book, "Write Ways To Win Writing Contests", but one of the qualities judges are seeking is originality.
I mean anyone can write, "The moon in June rhymes with spoon", but, strange as it may seem, fewer people can emulate, "Good morning, Jack! / But my mirror mimes empty words. / Singing swords not just blunted / Or blurred, but violently absent."
I quote of course from one of my own prize-winning poems (I mustn't breach any copyrights!), "The Actor Deprived of His Voice: A Post-Operative Soliloquy For Jack Hawkins", which has been published in numerous anthologies including "End of Season", and has even been included as an example of award-winning poetry in "Write Ways To Win Writing Contests".
To repeat: Originality is a quality highly prized.
