Win (Vincere) the 2009 movie

This lavishly produced 2009 Italian movie presents a stark vision of Benito Mussolini by concentrating on his private life (in particular his false marriage to Ida Dalser) rather than his public image. Indeed what little we see of his public image via two long speeches and a few newsreel clips, presents him as a clown. A monster, yes, but a clown nonetheless. Filippo Timi does well by this unsympathetic role by highlighting some of the magnetism that the blowhard dictator undoubtedly possessed. But the movie really and rightly belongs to Giovanna Mezzogiorno, who provides a soul-stirring portrait of passion and rejection. The DVD quality was superb.
