through the storm by robert p. robertson 8/29/2008 2:15:23 PM I'm really ashamed of Louisiana. Three years ago at this time, we were sitting in our attic waiting for the flood waters to recede. I had accepted the responsibility to provide for and to protect my family through the storm and through the flood. We had stopped looking for help and were resolved to survive katrina on our own, and we did just that for two weeks after Katrina, that is, until the Guards found us in our house, and I found myself arguing with them about why we weren't leaving. See, i grew up at a time when a person was resourceful, self-sufficient, and self-reliant. We had braved hurricanes before only to crawl from under the rubble, rescued those who needed to be rescued, and began the recovery process even before the streets could dry. I expected that same human spirit during katrina, but was surprised to see the amount of helplessness, anarachy, and self-sorrow that I saw. For many people, their 9-11 is calling first reesponders their "heroes", but my 9-11 was being challenged by those same "heroes" about my human, civil, and constitutional rights to remain in my home two weeks after the disaster was over. It was shameful and an outright disgrace to the rights and liberties America was founded on. Were it not for the American spirit to confront and endure hardships, this country would never have gotten this far. It is the strength and resourcefulness of our forefathers that is the foundation of America's greatness. But, when 1.2 million people were evacuated from one American city and they did "as they were told", even long after the event was over, it tells me that the principles of our forefathers are being eroded, and we're all being domesticated like cows and pigs, and chickens, fed, led, and bed as we're told. And if we don't do as we're told, we're sent to slaughter. I survived Katrina from lessons I learned from my elders, and I did what I knew how to do because I've never forgot the past. But I saw 1.2 miliion people who had forgot the past, and those who forget their past are doomed to repeat it. As hurricane Gustav swirls 1100 miles away, and I see people evacuating, I say to myself on this third aniversary of Katrina, "Man, we're doomed." But, I'm staying, the same as we did with Katrina, and when the storm is over, I'll go outside and begin to rebuild. Fuck the governor, the National Guards, Homeland Security, the mayor, or anybody else who is led like a domesticated animal.
