Much luv and One Luv out to the all the poets in BALTIMORE!!!! Eryk Moore, Starr Lisa and I went out to B-More two weeks ago, and I know the blog is late, but I had to let people know that B-More puts it down. The Art of Conversation . The Yabba Pot with E the Poet MC as host showed luv not only to the feature Eryk but myself, and the girl genius Danielle.
This place is amazing on several levels; first and foremost because of the atmosphere. See the spot is a vegetarian restaurant, but that's not the clincher. It was amazing because there were no microphones, no speakers, no electrical equipment besides the register and lights, and I don't mean fancy colored lights either. It was a room with chairs for the audience and a place in front for the poets to stand. A complete acapella paradise. So you know a poet like me felt right at home.
Now the other amazing fact about the venue was the set up of the show. Not since Omaha's writing group had I felt so at home and been such a writer. See, after you did your piece, the crowd commented on it and you were able to field questions from the audience. NOW THAT'S WHAT'S UP!!! I know in the spoken word community, we do not do enough of this—dialog was created that night. So big ups to E the Poet MC for creating a spot for not only poets, but for writers! We had a huge discussion on abortion, as well as spoken word scenes that was simply amazing, truthful, and enlightening.
The Poets, the poets, the f***in' poets PUT IT DOWN!!! Now I knew that poets did their thing up north, but damn, I didn't know they did their thing like that. Forgive ya boy for not writing down your names, but comment on the blog and let 'em know you were in the building that night—because the Baltimore poets that I saw there, blew us the hell away. I was most impressed with the age and spirit of the poets. Many times I'll hit a venue that's not geared toward the 25 and under. However, there were high school poets there who were honest, conscious, and real life writers. Expression is a wonderful thing, keep expressing yourself youngsta! So that really made my night. (For those of you who don't know, I've tutored youth in reading, math, and poetry so the B-More experience hit home for me)
So yea, B-More is off the chain. It's real because before Eryk had invited me to go on the trip (thanks Eryk!!!) I was really not feeling spoken word and the scene. So going on the trip with Eryk and Starr Lisa was a huge enlightenment!! And going to the spot was a spiritual enlightenment which re-energized ya boy beyond belief.
Now what can I say about the bad azz feature for that night???....hmmmm…..Eryk is the baddest muthaf***a on the planet. He is amazing because of the fact that this man will do so much for poetry, and he spits it!!! Now mind you, Eryk is in a wheelchair, and there were steps leading into the Yabba Pot. This man rose up out his wheelchair, up the stairs and into the venue like it was nothing!!!—wow now that's dedication!! And this man's feature was ridiculous!! He not only entertained the crowd, but educated them as well. A question was raised as to the underground vs. underground vs. below ground. Now the man answered this question with poise, professionalism, and poetry….all I can say is check this man's cd.
So this is it fam, I know it's a long ass blog, but that's what it do. Fuck with them B-More Poets, check my poem about the expierence, and get Eryk's cd, check The Starr Chamber on myspace, and if you get a chance, buy one of my cd's as well.
This weekend in the 'A' Written Images is goin' down!!!! . the Quest on Friday, and at the Apache on Saturday. So that's where I'll be, I'm on my way down to the Baby Grand right now so holla back folks…..peace and poetry.
Black August in Omaha!!!
