Passing of a Marine NCO to Valhalla
12/30/2010 6:19:12 PM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

It is my sad duty this day to report to you the passing of Ssgt Robert Arthur Pictou/Branscombe USMC, Vietnam, Silver Star, Purple Heart, CAP Platoon Leader. On the Sixth of February 1968 (TET) the Village of Wa Fu,about 15 Km west of Danang S. Vietnam came under intense ground attack by two Regiments of the North Vietnamese Army.Garrisoned by 12 Marines and 70 indiginous Popular Force Vietnamese. The North Vietnamese Forces were in route to attack the City of Danang. The Battle lasted from early evening untill dawn on the 7th. In the light of day, when reinforcements arrived Sgt Branscombe was the last man standing, wounded firing an M-60 machine gun. The NVA Forces suffered over three hundred casualties. They did not make it to Danang!
I have known my Brother Roberto for over forty years, 6'4" of arrogant, fearless Staff Sergeant. But he never thumped his own chest. He thought being a Marine was Sacred. And that being an American was even more. Not bad for a half Mic-Mac Indian boy from Nova Scotia who came to America as a young boy with his Parents, sister, and brother(also a Marine) He devoted twenty years of his life to investigating the murder on the Sioux reservation in S.Dakota of his cousin Anna Mae Pictou/Aquash (the character Maggie in the movie "Thunderheart") in addition to his helping many disabled veterans with their VA Claims. Well they found Robert on Christmas Eve, he died alone, in his small rock cabin in Rimrock Arizona which was where he wanted be. He died of natural causes, he was 63 years old. He will be missed.
Go with God my Brother Semper Fidelis
