What to Do if You're a Victim of Identity Theft
12/28/2008 7:27:02 PM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

Here's some tips to help you survive the ordeal.

I might have mentioned this in a previous blog, but it bears repeating. Here are some basic steps to take if you’ve been targeted by identity thieves.

. Notify your credit card companies and cancel accounts. They’ll be happy to issue you new cards.

. Notify your bank and place a “stop” order on your account if you think it’s at risk. Also let them know if you’ve had checks stolen so they can place a stop payment on any checks issued.

. Notify the police.

. Notify utility companies and anyone else you have financial dealings with.

. Contest any bill or statement when you know you didn’t purchase the item listed, even if it’s a small amount.

. Change your PIN and passwords.

. If you’ve lost your passport, driver's license or employee identification, advise issuers right away and request replacements.

. If your computer’s been tampered with or accessed without your knowledge, scan it for spy ware as soon as you can. Also change any passwords that may have been stolen.

. Pay attention to mail delivery.

. Create a file of everything concerning the identity theft. Document all correspondence and request full details concerning money owed.

. If you still do not feel secure about handling this yourself, hire an identity theft attorney.

This information comes from a press release from Home Security at

Hope this helps, and HAPPY NEW YEAR Everyone!!
