Take a Walk in Someone Else's Shoes
6/4/2009 2:54:11 PM
Guess I’m “Old School” but caring about others, their time, feelings, or whatever is important to them is something I take seriously. Today I arrived at my hair appointment seven minutes behind schedule due to detours and road construction. I immediately apologized for being late. After waiting a couple of more minutes, I was told that my hairdresser was on a field trip with her daughter and that I’d have to reschedule for another day - no apology or concern for my inconvenience was expressed by the girl at the front desk. Taken aback, I told her, "No I would not reschedule right then."

Call me crazy, but a simple apology on her part would have been easy and in order, but the messenger did not deem it important or necessary; thereby she made herself and the entire business look unprofessional. My trip to the confirmed appointment amounted to a one-way twenty minute drive through city traffic during the lunch hour.

When I returned to work, after a hurried lunch and another twenty minute drive, I penned a note to the owner of the shop. Ironically she was the one who “stood me up”. I told her I would not be returning as her client; I understood that the unforeseen happens, but it’s not too much to ask to be treated with courtesy and respect by any and all employees.

Lesson and reminder to me: be respectful and thoughtful of others at all times. I don’t know what kind of day they’ve had or will have and my words and actions could impact them more than I could ever know.
