Gray on Grey
2/25/2010 1:22:12 PM

I used to think gray was a non color - boring, lifeless, and with no story to tell, but I recently changed my mind. . .
I look forward to our drives along the Columbia River, especially as we head west toward Portland. We begin in the expanse of open, arid, wild pasture lands where tumbleweeds and cattle reign supreme. I'm happy to know that in a couple of hours, we'll enter the ancient, almost mystical, Columbia Gorge with its plethora of colors and textures. On the days the majestic river reflects the dull gray color of the sky, I find myself craving color, any color. I so love the many shades of green that the west side of Oregon offer. I can almost smell its rich palette of never-ending colors that overwhelms my senses.

But I have grown accustomed to, and now appreciate, the subtle colors of the eastern side of the state. Recently I realized how many shades of gray nature provides, and how utterly lovely they are: soft, unassuming, and as rich and warm as a woman's fur stole.

I can still see the cold, iron-gray Columbia River in the month of January, as it resolutely flows to the Pacific Ocean, and the soft gray-brown hues of the surrounding hills, along with the mouse-gray shades of the winter sky. It is all quite beautiful and grand in its own way. Come the spring and summer months, these colors will change to greens and browns, and the sky and river will be blue, as blue as a sapphire gem. So for now, I'm content with Gray on Grey.
