A BOGGLED BIRD
6/19/2006 2:58:41 PM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

I saw a brown bird this morning -- or more accurately, heard the huge thud that it made -- as it crashed into this window, then fell to the walkway. I thought it was dead, but after a few minutes, it awoke, began walking around (wobbling a bit, perhaps), and then started pecking at what appeared to be a blob of feathery poop. Maybe it had pooped out some sort of weird bird self-repair kit while it was blacked out. I thought I saw it catching small flying insects too, but clearly, the bird was consumed by whatever was in that poop, and so it consumed it -- again -- and in consuming it, consumed itself. And then it flew away.

Anyhow, it made me so glad when I looked out to check on my dead-looking visitor and instead saw it walking around, after thinking I was going to have to don a pair of latex gloves, pick up this dead bird, and drop it in the trash. So then I wondered if the bird realized what had happened, and where its mind had gone, if anywhere, while it was unconscious. Its beak appeared to be a bit crooked, and perhaps its brain, though clearly not too crooked to take care of itself. And in that regard, I thought, how much a boggled bird resembles most of us.
