isolation vs. aloneness 12/23/2004 11:17:19 AM alienation -- one of the Great Themes -- and my random thoughts on it today I would say that a major theme in my earnest creative work is that of isolation -- but more than that, isolation vs. aloneness. Alienation is a major theme of the past hundred years of human experience. What I want to know is, can alienation ever be adapted to with any lasting success? In other words, can a mentally healthy individual cheerfully sustain a prolonged state of alienation, without succumbing to bitterness, rancor, or self-destructiveness?
If we rewrite the famous maxim to read, "Every Man is an Island Sometimes," aren't we more likely to embrace success and happiness on whatever terms they display themselves, regardless of whether one feels an overarching, tangible bond with the rest of humanity?
