You know, I must be quite a writer. Several of my friends believe that my book is an autobiography. Why would a book titled Life: An Autobiography as Told by Jack Gunthridge be an autobiography? Nobody has even really heard of me, although I am an internationally award winning filmmaker. I even have my own TV show. You would think there would be a high demand for me to write my autobiography. I mean, my TV show has an average viewership of 20 people.
Anyway, Life: An Autobiography as Told by Jack Gunthridge is based on the script I wrote for a film called Life. The book has the As Told by Jack Gunthridge added to it so that people know they are being told a story. (It also has links to that Malcolm X book I had to read in high school as it was told to Alex Haley. I had to change a preposition and rearrange some words, but that has more to do with the fact that you have this being the autobiography of Jack Gynapsy, who eventually changes his name to Jack Gunthridge. I couldn't very well be telling this story to myself. It had to be by me.)
I see this work as the work I want to be known for. Pardon me. I see this work as the work for which I want to be known. Since I am an author now, I have to be careful not end sentences with prepositions.
I wasn't born Jack Gynapsy, but I was telling his life story. And since I want to be associated with this work, it makes sense that Jack Gynapsy would become famous and change his name to Jack Gunthridge. How else would I be linked to this work forever?
And it made sense to me to have the characters tell their story. I'm a screenwriter. I know how to write in a character's voice. I don't know how to write a novel. Plus I generally tend to read non-fiction works more than I read fiction. I'm more familiar with the genre.
And if you think about it, people, if this were an actual autobiography, I would have had to have given credit to Christine for the parts that she wrote. But she didn't write her parts. I did. I'm still waiting for somebody to call me sexist for not giving Christine co-author credit on this book because they think she wrote her parts. I'm just going to smile and thank them for thinking that I write like a girl. That's what every man wants to hear.
That's not saying that parts of this work weren't influenced by real life or by people I have known. All you need to know is that this is a work of fiction.
Of course, some people have been speculating that this is an actual autobiography and I have been distancing myself from the facts of my life. I have been known to do that. Maybe Christine broke my heart. Maybe I am still in love with her. Maybe she is the reason that I haven't had a successful relationship. I mean, losing a love like that does something to a man. A woman like that just can't leave a man like she did and not expect it to leave him a little bit empty inside. Of course, this is just speculation on some people's parts. I deny any of this being true.
Of course, I wouldn't believe anything that I say. I make my living by telling people stories.
I hope this clears up any confusion that the title of my book may have caused.
Thank you.
