Ongoing Afghanistan War
8/7/2011 3:35:10 PM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

It is time for the will of the American people to be honored by our elected representatives. The war in Afghanistan must end now. Bring our troops home. Bring our treasure home. Ten years of costly, go-no-where combat is long enough. Too many have already died. No significant nor lasting progress has been made.

My heart is heavy with the sadness of war. A young nephew, Tony McGovern, is facing daily combat in North Eastern Afghanistan under the shadow of Tora Bora as I write these words.

A recent viewing of Oliver Stone's film, JFK, served as a reminder of those dark days of the Vietnam War when I had two brothers on the ground "over there"-- at the same time... It also underscored the close similarities between the two conflicts and the official explanations released by the military-industrial complex, which controls the mouths of all our elected representatives.

As my young nephew strives to do honorable service to the uniform he now wears and stay alive in a very dangerous part of Afghanistan, I wonder if those who put him in harm's way--those who orchestrate the perpetuation of war around our planet, and who financially benefit from such ongoing conflict--ever really consider the profound reverberations of the discord they manufacture for profit.

People of Reason ask, and rightly so, isn't the "will to power" better served by cultivating humanity's inherent creative ingenuity than by bombing the opposition into submission? And if the bombing approach succeeds, for how long before conflict rises anew?

The continuation of the war in Afghanistan is no longer supported by the majority of the American populace nor its allies. It is clear, however, that the military elite, who need jobs, and the manufacturers of war supplies do continue to support the war. In a democracy, such as ours, however badly battered it is these days, should not the voice of the people override ALL others holding a contrary view? Has the full force of the military-industrial elite so consumed this nation that the collective will of the people is powerless to stop these misguided actions? I do not think so!

Every day this conflict continues, blood is being wastefully spilled, bodies mutilated, minds shattered. It has been ten long years now. There has been NO significant advancement in the cause of our American presence in Afghanistan. It is time for ALL of our elected officials to do as Americans wish: bring our troops home & bring home all that treasure too so we clean up our own house first and foremost. Just DO IT & do it NOW!

can't get HERE from THERE by Vince Sanders

The early 1970’s might have been the most appropriate time in America’s history to set up a radio news network for and about Blacks in the United States, more appropriate than any ..
