Tick, Tick, Tick, Tock....
7/24/2009 2:55:57 AM    [ Flag as Spam or Inappropriate ]

One moment we’re born, one moment we live, and one moment we die.

Life is one continual moment, when you stop to think about it. Really think about it. All we really have is the consciousness of the instant. The present.

How do you want to spend your consciousness of moment?

This week I returned from a trip to upstate New York, where I was raised, and in one of those highly charged, dense, emotional moment points (I can’t call it an epiphany, because I’ve already been well aware about what I’m about to discuss; it’s more of just having the “Kodak Moment” that I really wanted to share [“EasyShare™ or ©”?!]), to borrow a term, it really sunk in about how one moment we could be driving along a tree-lined North Country road, and in another be flying over the eastern seaboard. One moment working out in the gym, and another playing cards with your parents. One moment watching a movie. Another paying bills. Mowing the lawn. Listening to the joyful bubbling of brook or pounding crash of a waterfall. Watching fish in a pond. Walking in the rain. Staring into your loved one’s eyes and holding hands.

One moment we’re in high school, and the next looking back over the length and breadth of our storied lives.

All any of us really have is the actual no-shit moment in which we are acutely aware--THIS IS ME, NOW. I AM EXPERIENCING *THIS*. Many of us, I suspect, aren’t even aware. We’re just hurrying off, rushing to the next moment in a caffeinated-fueled haze. Blindly flushing away our singular instance, never to be experienced again, if you believe conventional thinking.

Again I ask...how do you wish to spend your point of power of present moment awareness?

That is what it is...your moment of awareness, your moment of consciousness. Your moment of everything. It’s all we have. This is where the illusion of Time breaks down. Yes, you intuitively know that you have a past...and a future. That you did things before what you’re doing now, and will do things you have yet to realize. But when you further analyze these moments, say, in the past, while you were doing them, you were ACTUALLY DOING THEM. That act was not a “past” action, it was a PRESENT action.

Sure, I’m splitting hairs--but dig deep into what I’m trying to say here.

Yes, you can now look back on those “past actions” and see they’re “done”...but at the moment you were doing them, they were present, and the current Future You looking back was yet unrealized.

But now, that current Future You is in the PRESENT.

I know I’m playing around with words, but when you meditate upon what I’m getting at, you’ll see the beauty in that all we really is the present. And we must not let those present moment points slip by....

There were times during my trip to New York and Vermont that I found myself trying to cling to my moments (paradox: if there is only one true moment, how can there be a plurality?)...riding the Lake Champlain Ferry to either state, enjoying the camaraderie of the my wife and family in the vehicle together, the way the afternoon light hit my Dad’s arm as he held the steering wheel. And in doing so, you feel the moment...lengthen the moment...but can also let yourself get carried away and feel these instances slipping away, like oily water through your grasp, as you keep trying to chase after them...when you realize your mistake; your faux pas. In trying to hold on to that intensified singular moment with all your might, you actually lose it. You become engulfed in the ever-moving dizzying chronological timeline you’re trying to distance yourself from in the first place. What you really need to do, is merely enjoy where you are at that singular instance. Take it all in, the smells, the sights, the feel, the emotion. The fourth, fifth, and sixth, et cetera, dimensional densities associated with each moment point. Curiously and somewhat contradictorily, by doing so, you actually flow with the moment and experience the heightened sense of NOW that exists at every moment-instance in time. You sense the string of moments that make up every life...every yesterday and tomorrow. And rather than feel separate and insignificant, you feel a sense of overwhelming joy and oneness with each instance in life. You experience the ubiquitous unification of all moments in your own personal timeline, and how they gracefully flow into each other. Form each other. ARE each other. No moment is separated from any other moment. They are all, truly, one moment. The present.

And maybe by focusing more on the NOW of our lives, we can help alleviate the frustration and impatience...the constant need to accelerate and bully our way through life.

At least that’s how I feel.

Frank--for the moment....
