The limerick...
1/6/2007 7:30:08 PM
Someone asked me to post my "lesson" on this type of poetry.

Now, a poetry lesson on the limerick.

Here are a few examples that I composed for *******

Shirelle* wants a cat as a friend

She looks for one 'round every bend

At last she finds Kitty

But ain't it a pity

He looks more like a rat than a cat

*Not her real name.

Shirelle works at a local bistro

You can see her go to and fro

She's the best at her job

Though her boss is a knob

She sure helps the business to grow

A gal from this town named Shirelle

Likes to shop through the "Buy and Sell"

A juicer she bought

Even though it was "hot"

Now Shirelle is the belle of a cell

Shirelle has created Ginormous*

She's not big in fact she's "ignormous"

She's brave and she's strong

She never does wrong

If she does it's never on purpose

*Ginormous is a computer game character created by Shirelle.

There's this gal I know from the "wack" (Chilliwack)

She worked at the Tim Horton shack

She's smart and she's pretty

She's sharp and she's witty

That's why the customers came back

NOTE:

A limerick is a five-line poem written with one couplet and one triplet. If a couplet is a two-line rhymed poem, then a triplet would be a three-line rhymed poem. The rhyme pattern is a a b b a with lines 1, 2 and 5 containing 3 beats and rhyming, and lines 3 and 4 having two beats and rhyming. Some people say that the limerick was invented by soldiers returning from France to the Irish town of Limerick in the 1700's.

Limericks are meant to be funny. They often contain hyperbole, onomatopoeia, idioms, puns, and other figurative devices. The last line of a good limerick contains the PUNCH LINE or "heart of the joke." As you work with limericks, remember to have pun, I mean FUN!
