A mothers fear
4/21/2009 5:52:33 PM
When your child faces the world you have spent the last eighteen years preparing him/her for . . .is he/she ready, are you?
This is a question I'm currently faced with now that my son is eighteen. This year is a year full of every emotion that a parent could possible have to deal with as a parent. Empty nest syndrome, a true medical issue, the child leaves the home set out to make himself/herself someone and leaves you at home alone. Hopefully independent and successful in their future endeavors’ they step out into freedom. Freedom to make their own decisions’ whether they're the right ones or not. As a parent you're lean on all the values or morals you've taught your child. Are they truly ready? Can they make that critical discussion on their own. Will they call you if they are stuck in a sticky situation. How many days do you let go by before you just can't stand it and you make that phone call to see how they are. Will they know when they are sick enough to need to see a doctor? Do they have the ability to recognize the signs of alarming issues of any kind?
This is when I feel you have to lean on your faith. Trust in your parenting skills and face the future with all the strength you can muster. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life. Raising my child has been nothing compared to this. I truly feel that this is when you really see who your child has become and how they will blend into a world that has many shapes and colors.
My son has decided to serve his country in the Marines. Although this scares the living... you know what out of me, I know that God will lead him in his adventures and he will be fine, as well as I.
