MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR 1/14/2010 4:28:43 PM By C'Rod Mom is a regular softie when it comes to her furry family. Nothing can distract her away from her writing like her beloved dogs. Although she is a devoted fan of mongrels—she has four at this time, Becky, Reno, Gus and Cocoa—she is an animal lover in general.
Reno and Gus are cast offs, pets Mom’s neighbors couldn’t take with them when they moved. Becky is a Sato. Sato (pronounced saw-toe) is local slang for mixed breed street dog in Puerto Rico. My Aunt sent her to Mom after finding her in a hole under her home in PR. Cocoa was an abused puppy Mom coaxed into her house. Mom also has five Grand-dogs whom she spoils rotten.
Not to be outshined by their canine counterparts, Mom’s cats, Black Jack and Hobbs, are the princes of the house, and have no problem keeping the rest of the pack in line. As his name implies, Black Jack is an enormous overweight black butter ball with saggy he-boobs. He is constantly picked on by trim Hobbs even though Hobbs is a fraction of his size. Both are cuddle bugs, and Hobbs has a penchant for raw ground meat, which he thinks he deserves to get every day.
Mom believes she got her love of animals from her Grandmother. Her maternal Grandparents owned a farm in Silesia. She spent a lot of time at this beautiful and peaceful place. She loved her Grandmother very much. According to Mom,
“Oma was a good cook, but killing one of her animals was torture for her. She had names for all of them. If she would run out of names, she would start naming them after her children. One day it was Hanserle’s turn to go. While cooking the rabbit, she cried the entire time. She would repeatedly sob, “Oh, liber Gott, mein Hanserle” (Oh, dear God, my Hanserle”) as tears streaked down her face. She never ate the meat of the beloved animals that were sacrificed for our table. After serving everyone, Oma would retire to her bedroom alone where she cried even more.”
