What Defines Successful Teamwork?
11/5/2010 1:29:40 PM
Strong teams are successful and get things done. Considering several theories about successful teamwork, what are a few essential traits required to make teams buzz?
I work with teams across many organizations. Some work smoothly while others have so much conflict it's amazing any product or service is delivered. You can find hundreds of materials on how to work as a team but what is the essence of high performing teams regardless of industry or function?

While this question will yield a variety of responses, a few of my observations that seem consistent:

1. Strong teams encourage each other
-Each individual brings a wealth of ideas and experiences to the group. When teams consistenly draw out the strengths of each person, the team thrives and people get excited to be their best.

2. Strong teams act authentically and ethically
-When teams are genuine about their intentions and transparent in their communications, the right thinking and behavior results. Individuals perform with a high degree of excellence and respect to make sure the integrity of the outcomes are sound.

3. Strong teams demand much of each other
-Once the foundation of performance and personalities are set, high performing teams move in harmony to whatever challenge or opportunity that comes along. Each person brings their "A-game" because the team is only as strong as the weakest player.

What traits would you add that make strong teams work so well?
