Should you blog?
Wednesday is blog day. That said, I want to add that Iím on the fence about this whole blogging idea. So Iím going to give this a try and see which side of the fence pulls me down.
Blogging means we need to find enough to say thatís interesting enough for people to read. It means we have to consistently have things to say, week after week, that is so interesting that we actually create peopleís desire to read our published works. Without that, is there a purpose to blogging?
Maybe. If you have an unpublished major nonfiction thatís taken you 16 years and a masterís degree in history to pull together and now canít find a publisher because youíre an Ďunknowní entity, blogging can be a great aid in building a platform related to this material.
Obviously there are other things to do as well. Thereís excerpting articles and getting those published. Iím working on it. Thereís volunteering to go around and give talks, at your own expense, of course, until you get published and/or are so fantastic at it that you become in demand. If only.
One thing thatís not been working for me to sell Civil War & Bloody Peace: one soldierís orders is querying and sending out proposals. That doesnít make me a known entity. As much as I was misled to believing it did. So as a history writer, fiction and nonfiction, I have to put my knowledge on the line. I have to be challenged, and meet those challenges, and that means building a platform, and that means blogging.
But do it well and do it right. So every Wednesday is blogging day. Is blogging for everyone? Probably not. See if you can put yourself in my shoes and maybe youíll figure it out.
