Winter in Tasmania
8/5/2011 4:03:32 PM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

A rainy Saturday morning at home

Apparently the month of July in Tasmania was the coldest in 10 years. Some mornings the temperature was as low as minus one degree on Mt Wellington, the mountain that dominates Hobart's landscape. Due to the chilly weather, most days the mountain is capped with a lacy white shawl - so impressive on fine, sunny days.Mt Wellington in summer is a bushwalker's delight.
We are so lucky to live in a house with large picture windows where we can see across the city, the Derwent River and the Eastern Shore.Mid-winter the fog drifts along the D river and, when extra heavy, spills out over the CBD and into our suburb. When is rains heavily we hear the swish of car wheels as they negotiate our corner. It is a soothing sound.
Today is such a day. here I am, sitting at our little round table, cup of coffee, writing this blog on our laptop while I listen to the mellow sounds of Leonard Cohen's voice coming from a CD. Occasionally I look out at the city and can barely make out the shapes of houses enveloped in a grey mist.
Inside our house the lights are on as visibility is poor due to the overcast weather conditions. Our house is surrounded by a mixture of local and imported trees - some about 60 years old - growing in our hectare of bush and garden.Inside, close by the heater, our dogs, Max and Sandy snooze as they nestle into their comfortable cushions. A good day to remain inside.
