HOBNAIL BOOTS
11/26/2011 6:36:10 AM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

This column is dedicated to the memory of Larry Munson, the announcer whose play-by-play of the University of Georgia football and basketball games covered 42 years. This unique fellow passed away on November 20, 2011 after a spectacular career that began as a pianist for the Tommy Dorsey orchestra, including initial arrangements for a skinny kid from New Jersey named Sinatra. Larry Munson became, as a broadcaster, more famous than any of the 4,700 men who wore the UGA uniform during his lengthy tenure, men such as Mike Bobo, Eric Zeier, David Greene, Hines Ward, Champ and Boss Bailey, Linsay Scott, David Pollack, Kevin Butler — even ‘oh, you Herschel Walker, you!’ There just is not room to name them all. But this one’s for you, Larry . . .

Rewind your brain quickly to the week of April 3 thru 12, 2011; it ran the gamut of Field of Dreams excitement.

Starting with the Final Four of ‘March Madness’ and culminating with the playoff of the PGA here in Atlanta, we corpulent couch potatoes looked forward to the opening games of Major League Baseball on a Sunday (not to mention the college baseball insanity,) the Shell PGA Warm-up Tournament finale, NASCAR mayhem (did Jeff Gordon actually win?), the NCAA Basketball Championship game Monday night (President Obama’s one noticeable faux pas since taking office: choosing Louisville over the Tar Heels,) the Master’s practice rounds, the Pro-Am, the 4-day Tournament in Augusta, the University of Georgia G-Day football game — what have I forgotten? Does it matter?

Of course, some say the Kentucky Derby in May surpasses them all (I disagree; horseracing is an exhibition, not a sport — it’s right up there with cock and/or dog fighting.)

Others are prone to swoon over tennis’ and golf’s U.S. Opens and sundry subsidiary events: Wimbledon, the PGA, etc. . . . The World Series. The Super Bowl. I personally love each and every one. I do all possible not to miss a moment. I would rather tailgate in the family room in front of my old Toshiba than win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Well, almost.

Come to think of it, we live in a time — and a country — that allows us to thrive on sporting events. And isn’t that just special!

The economy is in the toilet, there are nutcases in the Middle and Far East who wouldn’t know a hockey puck from a Frisbee, Democrats hate Republicans, Republicans hate Libertarians and Independents, Independents hate the NRA, the NRA hates everyone — and yet Americans from coast to coast have plastic credit cards with which to own big screen, flat HDTVs so they can watch PBS, the History Channel, Discovery, C-Span. . . . Yeah, right! If I got a choice between NASCAR and Ken Burns, where d’y’all think I am?

Notwithstanding the National Figure Skating competition, the drought between the Super Bowl and ‘March Madness’ is long over. Normalcy on the tube has returned. The stock market is recovering (sort of.) The housing market has got breathing room (a little.) Nine people found work. There is hope. Long live Jim Nantz.

We can look forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas in peace and quiet before it starts all over again. Except — GO DAWGS! The SEC Championship game is set for the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta on Saturday December 3. UGA vs LSU.

There was a time during my TV career when prime viewing of such events was gratis, times I took for granted. But now that I am long retired and a virtual nobody, the best seats I can find are in the High Upper End Zone, the Nose Bleed Section, the last row before making eye-contact with the Goodyear crew; 4 tickets cost a fortune, plus programs, hot dogs, beer and MARTA. I would love to take my Tennessee kids. But for that kind of dough, we’ll watch it — up close and personal — on the tube.

Wanna make a bet on the outcome?

Today is the annual bragging rights’ ‘classic’ between the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech. It’s a meaningless football game, yet it’s the most important of all. Last year UGA won 42-34. This year — who knows? Does it matter? You bet it does! We gotta win this one for the Munster!

If we do lose, however, December 3 will be just another piece of gridiron mayhem.
