My blog is about holidaying to Adelaide and setting off on a seven-day trip along the Murray River in a a paddle boat.
Holiday of a Life Time
March 3 2012:
My milestone birthday.George presented me with a gorgeous chrome plated dress watch and a huge box of Norman Dann chocolates. After a restful night in our spacious room at the Majestic Roof Garden in Adelaide we breakfasted at Cibo, a takeaway restaurant that was close by. I ordered muesli, yoghurt and fruit in a mug. Funghi and cheese on toast followed. George ordered a toasted bun with bacon, eggs and tomatoes. We greatly enjoyed the food, coffee and the atmosphere. Adelaide was a buzz with excited young people who were visiting the capital for the beginning of the Adelaide Arts festival.
Guided by a map we found the State Library of South Australia where I handed cards to staff that gave information about my memoir Gaining a Sense of Self. Other cards were dropped off at the Adelaide Council lending Service for purchase consideration. From there we visited the South Australia Art gallery. Staff obligingly cloaked our luggage while we wandered unburdened throughout the impressive galleries.
We reached the Mercure Grosvenor Hotel about an hour before our tour was due to commence. By then, the hotel foyer was filled with over 100 people waiting for our tour bus. Prior to our departure my brother and his wife had arrived from Queensland to join us on our holiday. There was just enough time to grab a bite to eat before we boarded a luxurious coach to take us to the little town of Mannum – 150 kms away. The trip to Mannum took about 90 minutes. We passed through parched landscape that was populated by tumble weeds bounding around the paddocks. Apart from sighting some horses, sheep and cattle there was little to see.
On arrival at Mannum we saw the magnificent Murray Princess paddleboat for the first time. It was larger than I expected and was four decks high. In our little cabin was a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine, courtesy of Captain Cook Cruises. We shared it with my brother and his wife. They had brought along a birthday present for me – handmade silver long drop earrings they bought from Montille, Qld. They were absolutely exquisite. The accompanying beautifully decorated card read:
Life is about celebrating the moments, believing in dreams, listening to our heart.
Mid afternoon the boat began to shudder as the huge paddle wheels came to life and the boat began its journey down the Murray River. The river was lined with enormous red gum trees that were used to tie up the boat whenever the boat stopped over at various places. A huge flock of white Corellas swirled around us and then settled in the trees nearby, as if to wish us “Goodbye. Safe journey” as they solemnly gazed at us from their perches as the boat glided past. The weather was wonderfully warm and sunny – so different from Tasmania’s cooler temperature. The scenery we passed was absolutely glorious! After a magnificent dinner everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to me. I was greatly moved by their acknowledgement of my significant day. That night we docked for the night at Mundurra and were able to go for a short walk in the pristine bush. What a memorable start to our holiday!
