Case of the Vanishing Bird Feeder

It must have happened early in the night because there were no foot prints in the newly fallen snow to tell what kind of animal had taken it away. I am guessing that it was a raccoon but I don't know that for sure.
There is absolutely no sign of the feeder anywhere around though it may have got covered by the snow that fell in the night. I am surmising that it has been taken down into the ravine or even back to the animal's den.
The birds and squirrels will have to go elsewhere today. The suet cake is still there but that is not much for the many visitors that come daily to the feeding station.
We had no trouble throughout the winter with marauding raccoons. Some winters we have had a lot of trouble with that and have taken the feeder inside the house overnight but this is the first sign this winter of any attempt at night-time theft of the feeders.
In winters past, when the raccoons have come they have just spilled the seed on the ground and fed from there. We have never had the feeder completely removed before.
When my sister comes home from her day-shift she may be able to find it. If not she will probably resurrect the one we used last year for the short time left before we bring the seed feeder in for the summer--replacing it with the hummingbird feeders.
