Eleven-year-old Mash plans to be a pilot when he grows up. Never mind that some of his friends think this is an impossible dream, Mash has set his sights on this goal and nothing will discourage him. So when he learns of an air show to be hosted just outside of the city, he resolves to go to it.
But getting there and coming up with the entrance fee of twenty-five dollars is a huge obstacle for Mash. He is a poor kid in a poor neighborhood where people stay put. His mother is too busy with her special drink to take him and his grandmother won’t go anywhere she can’t get to on foot. Soon, many of the other adults in Mash’s life, who are looking out for him in their own way, learn of his desire to attend the show. Judd, a tattoo artist, helps him figure out the mass transit system to get him there, but only after seeking approval of the local Catholic priest. The priest gives him a St. Christopher medal, the saint that watches over travelers, to keep him safe. His teacher, Ms. Monique, gives him her cell phone in case he gets into trouble.
Enter Juniper and Stuart, two totally unrelated, totally zany characters. They, too, have big plans on the day of the air show. And they are all about to converge—Mash, Juniper, and Stuart—on the scene.
The book has a wildly imaginative, off-the-wall plot. Mash is a totally loveable character, and I grew to like Juniper and Stuart. I loved all the scenes with Mash and would have liked it if the whole story were told from his point of view. I recommend it for middle grade readers with eclectic tastes.
