Looking at Mo Hayder
5/25/2012 6:12:19 AM
I have been away from this blog for a couple of years, so it is understandable if readers have forgotten its original purpose which was to talk about current mystery writers. Today I would like to discuss Mo Hayder, who recently won the Edgar for Best Novel.
I have only read two of Hayder's books, THE DEVIL OF NANKING and GONE, the novel for which she won the Edgar. Based on the two novels I read, Mo Hyder's strengths are great description, which gives you a wonderful sense of place, and careful character development. Both novels, particularly GONE, also had clever plot twists that kept the reader guessing.
Hayder is an English writer, and the blurbs on the cover of Gone were mostly from British sources, and they described her book as fast-paced. I'm inclined to think that American readers would find them rather deliberate in their pacing. It seems to me that British mysteries in general are less action-packed than American novels. This can be appealing or not depending on taste. I would recommend taking a look at both of these novels and deciding for yourself.
