Okay, that's it! I've had it. Done with thinking I still have hair. It's gone. Gotta face it.
Time to admit that the abundant-haired ginger I used to be is finished. Passed on to my daughter, with happiness for her great hair days still a-head for her. Mine are over.
Only a couple years ago I had a woman client in her late, late 70's, who came into the salon with a lovely modified chignon updo. When I took out the clips and lowered the blinds, they were shockingly thread-bare. Oh my! Stylists always must remember that their facial expressions are being studied by the person in the chair, so as I combed great wadfulls of detached long hair, I carried on listening and engaging without a hint of the absolute horror I felt seeing clumps of seaweed shedding out of her otherwise nearly waist-length threads. I set the nests discretely on the rollabout cart in a place where she could not see. Why make her look at her own dissolving. Not nice.
Meanwhile, I am thinking to myself, "If my hair ever gets this thin, I'm cutting it faster than a bird passing wind through feathers."
Well......why haven't I?
I AM just about at the place the woman had arrived hair-wise.....six or ten threads at each temple and a few sprouts atop. The long stuff feels neat and feminine, but it springs from the same nape circumference that old-man horseshoe-pattern hair loss springs. Yeah, if you gather it up and spread it around the bowling ball bald part of the head, it can, at quite a distance, look like you have real hair on your whole head, but up close and too personal.....not.
So, why do women over 60 still want long hair? Because in each of us there is a wish to still have something Godiva-ish in our lives, even if it is chocolate, because on the inside we are yet 29.
on the wall,
please stop me
from going bald.
Let me have
a few sweet threads
to wrap around
my balding head.
