That's What I Think
6/25/2012 9:35:30 AM    [ Flag as Inappropriate ]

I have a two part story to tell. It is about a trip I had to make to the Vet. My hope here is to show how determined my anxiety is to stop me. But, I also show my tenatcity and strength in figuring out how to thwart my anxiety. Here goes:

Sometimes I’m the Mad Hatter. You know the crazy guy from Alice in Wonderland.

As you all know I have anxiety. I’ve had this condition since I was a small kid when I walked home from school with my sister and key around her neck let us into our two bedroom duplex on Anderson Avenue alone. I was in first grade she in second. It would now be classified as chronic. What does Chronic mean: Chron`ic [kronnik]

Long-Lasting:
Describes an illness or medical condition that lasts over a long period and sometimes causes a long-term change in the body

With long-term illness:
Having a particular long-term illness or condition
*a Chronic asthmatic

Always Present:
Always present or recurring

Habitual:
Repeatedly doing something or behaving compulsively
*a chronic eater

Yes that pretty much covers it!

Well because I have anxiety I live life a little differently than other people. I am bringing this up because just within the last two days I faced a dilemma and was challenged for a solution. I’m living, as some of you know, temporarily in Boardman Oregon. A hole in the cosmos that the world doesn’t know exists. Boardman has one burger joint, a post office, a police force, one tavern, three gas stations, one beauty salon called the Mouse Factory, an urgent care facility, a library, and one grocery store. Oh, and three banks.

Boardman has no veterinarian. I have a puppy. He needs to see the Vet for his second shot in his inoculation series. That Vet is 25 miles away in Hermiston Oregon. My darling “husband” Frank had to work this Saturday so it was up to me to get puppy to the Vet. If you’ve read my writings or my books you will know that I do not normally drive on freeways. So I had to set about figuring a route that could take me to Hermiston that did not include freeways. Why am I doing this? Because…Frank is unexpectedly working so I have to go and I cannot envision myself on the freeway. It is a long straight drive of 25 miles, with semi-trucks, and other vehicles buzzing about me. This area of Oregon is frequented with strong winds..scary for me.

On Friday I decided I should take a practice run to Hermiston. I had googled a map for myself and it had a route for me that took me there on all these different roads. I also had the GPS in the truck as a back up system. I was nervous. You could even say shaky. I brought puppy with me, water, crackers and nuts. Yes, nuts as in cashews and walnuts. I must always be this prepared it helps quell the anxiety. Off I went. I had no freakin clue where I was going… The map said turn left here, so I did and then it said go to I84 to hwy 206! What! That is not where I want to go that would be west and I needed to go east. Plus I84 is the freeway I’m trying to ignore. The GPS was telling me to do the same thing. Oh crap.

I realized these two marvels of technology were not going to be of help to me so I followed my nose. I knew there was a frontage road along I84 and that was my first intention. And I did find one but only from making a mistaken turn that put me right on I84!! I had to now drive east to the next exit! It was three miles ahead. Holy smokes…exactly what I did not want to do! When I got off I saw the frontage road, Yay! When I got to the frontage road I looked back to see if it kept going west and it didn’t look like it did. You see this exit put me smack dab at the beginning of a tree farm. And while it looked like a road it also looked like a road not intended for access. It was dirt/sand/gravel and skirted the highway and the tree farm. So I turned left and headed east toward Hermiston along the paved frontage road. This went great for about 12 miles when the road ran out and I came upon exit 179. The exit I needed was 182, so three more miles to go. I got on the freeway, damn it all, and had to go three miles to exit 182. While driving I began to panic and had to call Frank. He can usually talk me down from a panic attack. This helped and I exited just fine. I went into Hermiston and promptly turned around and headed back. I was determined to find more frontage road. And lo and behold I did. On the overpass of exit 182 there is a frontage road that takes one west (well and east if I’d known it existed) so on it I went. Nice road, gravel but a red color and didn’t kick up must dust. This went for 3 miles. I saw pretty cows, horses and sheep, also farms. Then I came to a T in the road and had to take a right which took me to the freeway again. I84..! But there was no more frontage road…So on the freeway I went heading west. Ugh, I began to panic again and decided I would take the next off ramp regardless!

Part two tomorrow.... Cheers, Karla
