Reading In The Garden

I wrote this reflection, after a recent reading that I took part in, in a beautiful garden in Spencerville: Tom Dunn's garden. It was part of the Authors In The Garden fundraiser for the Spencerville Library. Thank you to all of the authors out there sharing their stories and poetry.
Reading In The Garden
That’s me – over there – sitting at a small table, surrounded by beautiful flowers. I’m holding a book in my hands; a children’s book – my book. I’m breathing in the scent of roses and peonies, honeysuckle and lilies; and I’m exhaling my simple rhymes; my poetry. I hope it’s a fair exchange. I come to realize that I too, for a brief time, am a part of this garden – a temporary transplant; and my fingers enfold small blossoms: humble words and images that have sprouted from the seeds of my own childhood. I have witnessed with wonder, the birth of the poems as they flew from the keys onto the paper. I weeded and hoed them until what was left were the words that truly spoke to my heart. These smiling seedlings called out to become part of the greater garden; to spread their roots; to add petals of beauty and hope to the diverse and complicated tableau that makes up this world. As I sit at my ‘market table’, I’m holding my own ‘plant sale’, as it were, offering cuttings from this Edie Bee vine:
“How To Wash A Puddle”, and “How To Grow A Puddle”: two bound friends that wink at me as I pick them up, one after the other, and that sing back to me, “I remember you – You typed us into life!”
To all of you who are out there sharing your own creative offerings, in whatever setting you have chosen, thank you for adding beauty to the garden!
