Café

Weekend brunch.

We receive such bounty that we are overfull - often eating with abandon or unconsciously from abundant measure masquerading as a 'single' portion. Yet, this day, we lingered over lattes and ample brunch choices, finding fullness and contentment and ‘leftovers’ for later.

So, with transparent plastic container in hand we joined the weekend sidewalk parade of pedestrians. Barely beyond the restaurant entrance, a woman with forlorn gaze was propped against a large box, and held a cardboard sign – the word ‘hunger’ was prominent. Her other open palm said the rest.

“Will you accept this?” I asked. She looked with interest as I explained the contents. She nodded. I thanked her and passed her the ‘leftovers’, saying I’d be right back. Returning with plastic knife and fork and several paper-thin napkins, I saw that she’d already made brunch a finger-food meal.

“Take care of yourself today,” I offered, with a gentle touch on her shoulder. She looked me straight in the eye, rocked forward a bit, and said, “Okay.”

So much food; so many‘leftovers’; how many empty stomachs?
